With over 2.6 billion viewers and 114 million channels worldwide, YouTube is a modern day phenomenon! I still remember when there were only three networks – ABC, NBC and CBS.
While most people believe that being a content creator is a big opportunity. As a marketer, I am convinced that the bigger opportunity is taking advantage of YouTube’s low advertising rates to promote products or services to target audiences.
Sponsored videos are preceded by sponsor advertisements. The viewer is given the option to skip the ad after viewing it for a few seconds. If the user skips, it is not counted as an Ad view. Currently it costs the advertiser about $0.10 to $0.30 per ad view. Advertisers are charged only for videos not skipped.
If 1 in 100 people buy, the YouTube costs are a mere $10 to $30 per sale. If 1 in 1000 people buy, the cost is $100 to $300 per sale. Your financial return depends on your customer revenue and lifetime value.
Getting Advertising views is one thing. Converting views into customers is another. That is a function of the customer’s perceived need and ability of the product or service to fulfill that need.
Good targeting makes a difference. A mechanic specializing in German automobile repair sends a mailer to his entire neighborhood promoting his business. The initial mailer costs him $2000 and he gets about $2000 In repair business. The problem was that he was sending mailers to American and Japanese car owners as well. For the next mailer he gets smart, targets only owners of German cars, spends his $200 in advertising and pulls in $2000.
